As a parent, making sure your child is as healthy as possible is understandable one of your highest priorities.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) has been introduced by the federal government to make that task a little easier if you receive benefits such as Family Tax Benefit A payments. The CDBS helps you keep your kids’ teeth in great shape by providing you with up to $1000 that you can use over a two calendar year period on a range of dental services including examinations, routine cleaning, fillings, and root canals.
What the CDBS doesn’t cover, however, are orthodontic (the straightening of crooked teeth), cosmetic dental procedures (the restoration or replacement of damaged or missing teeth), or any work that might need to be done in a hospital. If you aren’t sure what’s covered, just ask your dentist.
Your child’s eligibility
Your child is deemed eligible for the CDBS by Medicare, who administers the program, if:
they’re within the applicable age range for at least some of that year
they qualify for Medicare;
and you receive either Family Tax Benefit Part A, Parenting payment or Double Orphan Pension payments for at least some of that year.
Your child can still access CDBS services throughout a particular calendar year regardless even if your circumstances change. Even so, it’s still worth confirming with Medicare that your child still qualifies for CDBS before phoning your dentist to book an appointment.
Keep in mind that not all dentists perform services under the CDBS; it’s best to check with your dentist if they do prior to booking in for treatment.
Using your $1000 allocation
To ensure that you’re aware of the costs upfront, your dentist will explain all probable expenses and get your consent in writing before treatment begins. If there’s any additional work needed following the initial examination, the costs will again be outlined and your consent obtained. This means you can then decide how quickly or slowly you use your $1000 allocation; you can use it all at once if you need to, or spread the spending out over the two calendar years.
If you’re not sure how much of your allocation you have left to use, your dentist at AMR Dental can look that up for you, and let you know if you’ll be up for any out-of-pocket expenses.
Airflow is a Swiss innovative device that projects a controlled stream of air, warm water and fine, sweet powder onto the tooth and in hard-to-reach areas to remove food particles, plaque and stains.
The high pressure water/air stream cleans your teeth much faster, efficiently and comfortably.
One of the benefits of the AIRFLOW® system is the water is heated to 40 degrees Celsius which has proven to be perfect for those with very sensitive teeth, making the cleaning process so much more comfortable.
As well as removing stains, AIRFLOW® can be used for many different treatment types including: cleaning orthodontic brackets, dentures and implants. The specially formulated powder formula removes stains with ease, all without damaging the soft tissue or implants.
What is guided biofilm therapy and what to expect in the session?
It is estimated that 1mm of dental plaque contains more than 200 million bacteria. If left untreated, the bacteria can spread and develop biofilm. Biofilm is a colony of bacteria that can cause gum disease and compromise your body’s immune defences.
Your dental hygienist will apply a coloured dye to your teeth which reveals any plaque and biofilm present.
You’ll then be given an educational demonstration on how to effectively care for your teeth and gums at home to help minimise plaque build-up. This is a great visual and motivational tool which will show you which areas you’re missing and which areas you need to spend a little more time cleaning at home.
The plaque build-up, coloured dye as well as any stains will be effectively removed with AIRFLOW®. This is a big step in preventing and treating gingivitis (gum disease) and periodontitis.
Next, if you have any hard calculus, your hygienist will remove this with the EMS ultrasonic which also emits warmed water. However, the use of AIRFLOW® prior minimises the amount of time in which an ultrasonic is needed, making the process quicker and more comfortable.
So now you can see why we’re so excited here at AMR Dental to introduce such a fantastic system. You can now experience stain-free, clean teeth with much less discomfort. It’s time to give your teeth the best clean they’ve ever had!

This programme gives AMR Dental the opportunity to collect on behalf of the community, whilst raising money for the charity of our choice, River Angels.
How does it work?
Members of the community bring in their oral care waste and drop it in to the recycling bin at the AMR Dental reception area. Once we collect a certain amount, we post these items to TerraCare, and they in turn make a donation on our behalf to River Angels, a charity supporting people in our community with cancer.
What can I recycle?
Program accepted waste: Toothpaste tubes and caps, manual toothbrushes, electric toothbrush heads, toothbrush and toothpaste tube plastic packaging, floss containers.
Not accepted: Please recycle your cardboard packaging in your kerbside recycling bin. Electronic toothbrush handles and bases are not recyclable through this program and instead should be collected and shipped separately through the Electric Toothbrush Recycling Programme, which has specific shipping requirements.
What happens to the waste?
Once collected, the tubes and brushes are separated by composition, shredded and melted into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products. Click here to learn more about the recycling process.
